[ clarisse doesn't do valentine's. she doesn't really do holidays in general, mostly because she thinks most of them are bullshit. they're all just an excuse to buy shit and pay way too much for it -- or they're an excuse to get drunk. she can always get behind a holiday where she can get drunk. not that she can't just get drunk whenever she feels like it, but it is nice having a better excuse than i'm bored and lonely. not that she's entirely lonely, anymore, but whatever she has with jason isn't really the same as whatever she had with knox. or murphy. or percy. (she doesn't have anything with percy. there's nothing going on. it's never going to happen.) it's more than nothing, though, and it's an outlet. it's better than stewing in her own frustration and taking it out on people who seriously should not be going up against a demigod. ]

[ jason really shouldn't be going up against a demigod, either, but he's at least trained. she's actually kind of impressed. for a mortal, he manages to keep up with her in a way she'd only expect from one of her brothers or a select few other campers. if she's honest, he has the attitude to be a son of ares. he certainly has the tenacity. and the anger. if she didn't already know he was mortal, she'd wonder if they were related. she has to thank the gods they aren't, or she wouldn't be able to look at him the way she does and not feel wrong. she won't deny he's attractive, that he's built stronger and toned better than most mortals she's come across. he has the body of a warrior, a soldier -- there are scars she doesn't ask about, but it makes her feel more comfortable about her own body and its scars. she's never been ashamed of them, but most people don't find her war-torn body particularly attractive. jason, at least, can understand. ]

[ they've started sparring regularly, clarisse offering some of her training expertise. jason is way beyond the level of a young demigod, but she still generally has the upper hand. he's getting better, though, learning how she moves, how her mind works -- and she's learning him, too. it's more of a routine, now, than a fight, a dance choreographed by fists flying and legs kicking and their bodies reacting to each other in a way that seems almost intensely intimate, in the way they've come to know each other. it's a rush, definitely, and more than just adrenaline. there's an element of arousal clarisse never speaks of and never questions of jason (she thinks she's seen some evidence of it, once or twice, but it would mean admitting she'd been paying that much attention, which she doesn't want him to know). she can't help it, the way she would rather shove him against the wall and kiss him than continue what they started. she wonders if he's ever wanted her to. ]

[ but it's valentine's day today, and some deeply buried romantic part of her thinks why the hell not, just go for it, it's valentine's day, even if crushing her lips against his once she has him pinned to the wall isn't actually very romantic. it's her type of romance -- rough and sharp around the edges. ]

SO LATE I'M SO SORRY

[The thing is, Jason doesn't usually find anyone who's not only at his level but above it. And definitely not between the baseline humans. There's Bruce, though he's not opening that can of worms, and most of the Robins would make him break a sweat but overall Bruce and Talia's training made it sure that he's ready for any eventuality during a battle. He's a warrior, through and through. Dick might have been good with his body but Jason was the natural brawler. So while he's no strange to failure at all it's not exactly a feeling he's used to, either.

And then there's Clarisse.

He knows it's not fair to compare. Jason might have been a natural but she was literally born for it. Jason has adopted war into himself but it's literally running through her veins, making her who she is and watching her in battle is like watching the first strokes on a masterpiece. She makes no unnecessary movements, never makes the same mistake twice. It's not just about strength, it's the way her brain works when it comes to the battle itself. And Jason would be lying if he said he didn't find it hot as hell. She's younger than him, smaller too, but she could tell Jason to get on his fucking knees and he would so fast his head would spin.

But he's good at keeping that to himself. He had to learn back home, because of the Mission that always came first, and it's become kind of a habit by now to keep his thoughts from straying. So he spars with her, has friendly banter, gets his ass kicked more often than not (he's getting better, he swears he is, but Clarisse keeps having the upper hand still) and if he loses himself to his hand then that's his own fucking business.

Until Clarisse kisses him against the wall, that is. Jason is only human after all. He doesn't waste a second, just reaching for the back of her neck to pull her close as he happily returns the kiss as aggressively as he can. Some guys would probably feel weird being pinned against the wall, but Jason relishes in it.]
