[ wally has never been very good about keeping his speed on the "down low." barry isn't really very good about it, either, so it's not totally his fault when his mentor slash partner slash uncle isn't setting the best example. they're actually a lot alike, him and barry, at least in their impulsiveness — but that might also be partially due to the speed. whatever the case may be, even when wally is in civvies, sometimes he just can't help himself and he might accidentally put on a burst of speed here and there when it isn't totally necessary. ]

[ however, he'd like to argue that it's totally necessary when it's saving a very hot cup of very well-made coffee from splattering all over the floor. he's seen the looks on people's faces when the cup shatters into disappointing little pieces of their broken coffee dreams, and — well, maybe he makes the exception this time because the person in question about to spill their coffee everywhere is a very pretty girl, and wally can't just do nothing when he knows he's perfectly capable of doing something in less than a blink of an eye. no one will even see him move that fast, right? it'll be fine. ]

[ or, well, it would be fine if wally were actually good at slowing down. which, unfortunately, he isn't. so even more unfortunately for the coffee and the girl it belonged to, wally's heroic save turns out to be a pretty unheroic fail, his attempt to catch her cup before it shattered and spilled coffee everywhere only half succeeding, but with much worse consequences than anyone noticing how fast he moved from one section of jitters to the other. that is to say, linda's coffee doesn't end up on the floor where it can't hurt anyone, it ends up straight on her clothes — because, in wally's most valiant effort to set the cup back on the table at superspeed while also trying to stop himself from running into the table at superspeed, he managed to dump the contents of the cup all over the table and linda herself. ]

[ yeah, great first impression there, wally. ]

Oh shiOhmygodI'msosorry[ frantically, he runs for napkins, as if that will help at all. he knows there's one thing that would help, but that would be an even dumber idea than his first. so, somewhat helplessly, and very much apologetically, he holds out a few napkins and continues to apologize like there's no tomorrow. ] I was just trying to — you know, I usually have pretty good reflexes, I guess I just overshot it by a little and — god, are you okay? I'm really sorry, I'll buy you, like, the biggest cappuccino they have to make up for it — or, hey, doesn't even have to be a cappuccino! I mean, I probably wouldn't want a cappuccino after some jerk spilled mine all over me. God, I really shouldn't have tried to — [ shut up, wally, just shut up. ]

[It's been one of those days. And the days only been a few hours long. At least if you're a normal person, who sleeps normal hours anyway. Linda hasn't slept all night between covering Central City's baseball team's recent loss to Coast City, and also subbing for the community piece because the usual writer was on maternity leave and they were cycling through the rest of the jounalists. It's Linda's turn this week and the deadline is in just a few hours.

Suffice to say she's been living on cappuccinos since Jitters opened. So when she almost knocks her cup off the table trying to grab for the handle and completely missing - this is why you watch what you're doing, Linda, and not the laptop screen - it feels like world is about to end. Okay, maybe that's an exaggeration. Maybe. But it does almost feel like time slows down, and she can see everything happen before it actually does.

It only lasts for a second, and then someone's there to -- spill the coffee all over her.

At first she's not even sure it really happened. This has to be a dream right? This is some awful work nightmare, and next thing she knows her screen will start sparking comically and the words will just tumble out into one big mess. Right?

But then napkins are being thrust at her, and that someone is apologizing.

And she should probably say something.

Say something Linda.]

So, where are the cameras hidden?

[Good one.]

[ for as fast as wally he, he can also be incredibly slow. usually on the uptake. like right now, for instance. it takes him a moment to process what linda actually said, because, for one, it wasn't what he was expecting; and, two, she doesn't actually seem ... mad? unless she's one of those people who gets really calm when they're mad. wally doesn't like those types of people because it's almost impossible to tell when he's done something wrong. which ... if he's being honest, he does a lot. ]

Huh? [ yes, very intelligent. it's a little hard to follow the situation when he's been so abruptly thrown off his train of thought. that's the problem with speedsters — they end up talking so fast and so much they don't realize they've gotten so far off track until they're thrown back on the rails by the harsh thrust of reality. and the reality here is, well, he's just spilled coffee all over a pretty girl, he has napkins in his hands, he can't remember how many times he's said "i'm sorry," and linda is talking about hidden cameras. wally might be a scientific genius, but making logical jumps like this just isn't his forte. ]

[ he blinks a few times, glancing down at the napkins as if they can help him, then back at linda with a genuinely confused furrow of his brow. ]
What cameras? This — [ and that's when it dawns on him: ] What? No, this isn't a joke! [ he holds his hands up in surrender, hoping that by frantically waving them it might convince her that he is not trying to play a practical joke on her. ] It was, well ... a really unfortunate accident. I was trying to save it, honestly! I just ... [ didn't decelerate properly ] tripped. [ yeah, nailed it. he laughs nervously, attempting an apologetic smile. ] I don't know if these napkins will help, but... [ it's he best he could do with the resources available to him. ]

[He seems really, really sorry, (Like really sorry, he's only said it about a dozen times) and as much as she would kind of like to take all her frustration out on him, Linda knows this isn't his fault. Exactly. It kinda is. In that her coffee would be on the floor and not on her if it wasn't for him. But he tried, right?

She lets out a loud, long sigh and shakes her head, forcing a smile.]

That was sarcasm. [She's checking her laptop now to make sure it's not damaged at all. Lucky for Wally, it seems to be safe.] It'd be a pretty lame joke anyway. [She takes the offered napkins and wipes up what landed on the table before it can drip further, then looks down at herself. Well, the blouse is ruined.] Maybe next time you try playing hero, you could be a little less klutzy about it. [Okay, so that was kind of mean. She looks back down at her soaked shirt again.]

I guess I appreciate the effort. [said as a bit of an afterthought.]

[ he's really not trying to beat himself up about it, but it's hard when he feels so bad about not only wasting linda's cappuccino, but spilling it all over her blouse as well. unluckily for him, he has a pretty bad case of foot-in-mouth syndrome, so despite all his best efforts to not make a total fool of himself, he still usually does. like right now. maybe he's just nervous because linda is really pretty — like, wow, way to go wally west, spill coffee on the prettiest girl in the whole building. ]

Uh, well — you're welcome? I mean, yeah, I really should probably work on the whole ... klutzy ... thing. [ after this encounter, she probably wouldn't be surprised to hear how many times wally has run into walls or people or furniture... it's kind of a problem, but fixing it is honestly a lot easier said than done. ] But, um, since I basically ruined your shirt, I, uh ... I've got a hoodie in my backpack if you wanted to change? [ oh, wait, maybe that sounds really forward. uh. ] Or not! I mean, honestly, it's totally up to you, I just ... thought I would offer.

You know... [The blouse is ruined, and she does have to go into work today. It wouldn't be a huge deal to run home and change, but she still has plenty of work to do and her boss will probably skin her alive if she doesn't have this community piece done. (that might be an exaggeration, but he'll give her looks. Of the disapproving variety.)]

I might take you up on that offer. Maybe it'll keep me from smelling like coffee all day. [She laughs a little, hoping maybe it will help him ease up some.]
