[ going on a life-changing field trip with zuko was a lot different than the trip he isn't sure is going to be all that life-changing with korra. she's already technically changed his life; he's not really sure how she could do it again. but she is the avatar, so who knows? she can pretty much do anything, and that's already more impressive than basically anything sokka can do, so, you know, he wouldn't really mind if she tried for round two. things have been looking pretty bleak on the war front, anyway; they could all use a pick-me-up. (which is sort of the whole point of this little escapade, honestly.) if anyone can turn things around, though, it's definitely korra. to say sokka believes in her would be an understatement — he more than believes in her, like, he's not even sure there's a word for that, but if there is, that's how he feels. he'd put his life on the line a hundred times for korra because he knows she's the only hope of restoring balance to the world. ]
[ they break for camp around lunchtime to give naga some time to rest by a small lake in the middle of a fairly secluded area. it's mostly just trees and trees and trees, and sokka for one is really glad the trees are neutral in this war. having to deal with fire nation trees? that would just be overkill because they're literally everywhere. he figures most of the trees would side with the earth kingdom given the whole earth thing and trees come from the earth, but you never know with some of these things. he's seen some pretty shifty-looking trees in all their travels. some of them could be fire nation in disguise. ]
[ that's not really the point, though. the point is there's a lake, which means there are fish, which means food. and, boy, could sokka really use some food right about now. it's not like he's starving, exactly — no, okay, maybe he actually is a little starving. just a little bit. they've only been traveling for what seems like forever and they haven't had a decent meal in days. is it so much to ask for a town around here? a village? even a house! he definitely isn't below sucking up to kind old people in the middle of nowhere for something good to eat. mostly the end up eating whatever they can hunt, and while sokka prides himself on his excellent hunting skills, there hasn't been much in the way of a good kill recently. (probably those shifty fire nation trees scaring everything off.) at least the lake means there has to be more than one fish, right? ]
[ he doesn't even bother making a fishing rod, because he's really just that awesome at catching fish he can do it with his bare hands. at least, he hopes. he hasn't ever really tried it before considering, you know, ninety percent of the water in the southern water tribe is trapped under ice. it's called ice fishing, not "hey sokka stick your hands in freezing cold water to impress a girl" for a reason. if it really was to impress a girl, though? he'd do it. he won't lie. he's probably done stupider things than that to impress a girl, anyway. ]
[ not that, uh, he's trying to impress anyone with his feat of stupidity in trying to catch a fish with his hands. wow, don't be ridiculous. korra is the avatar; he's pretty sure he couldn't impress her, anyway. it's just, you know, it's really hot outside, so him wading knee-deep into the lake with his shirt off is by no means any kind of attempt to get her to notice him. he's crouched over his knees, watching the water intently, looking for the perfect catch, when, of course, the perfect joke comes to mind, as they usually do. his comedic timing is golden. ] Hey, Korra. What do you call a fish with no eyes? [ oh, and there it is, the biggest, fattest, most beautiful fish he's seen in months. as he lunges for it, trying to capture it between his hands, he finishes: ] Fsh. [ yeah, he's a genius and immediately cracks himself up, only to be disappointed that he doesn't actually have a fish in his hands. he slumps his shoulders, eyes darting around the water for what was supposed to be the catch of the day. it was probably offended by his joke, honestly. ] Oh, come on, get back here! It wasn't that bad! [ he is talking to the fish, yes. this is what hunger does to a man. ]
[ Traditions are important in their culture, and as such, Hakoda, chief of the Southern Water Tribe, has decided this particular foray into the vast snow covered near-nothingness should be experienced by none other than his own son, Sokka. However, as exhaustion begins to set in and their supplies start running low, he's having his share of second thoughts.
They've been three days out in the wilderness, and the snow hasn't stopped for a moment. During this seasonal hunt, the warriors take advantage of the Midnight Sun, but snowfall has been heavier than usual and it's only serving to make things more difficult.
Nearing what must been late evening — it would be impossible to tell the true time, but his internet clock adjusts well enough to the constant daylight for an educated guess — Hakoda slows to a stop along a swath of pines and birch trees, somewhat concerned by their sudden appearance through the white sheets of snow. ]
We'll camp here.
[ They should be farther south by now, closer to home, but their surroundings say otherwise. If they're to survive, they'll need to function carefully and wisely from here on out. Which... may be easier said than done when Sokka's involved. ]
I can build us a fire if we collect up enough branches.
[ Dry branches specifically, which are trickier to come by in a forest in the south than a person might expect. ]
