—Gleeson Hedge, The House of Hades
Clarisse La Rue, at her core, is a child of Ares. With that comes all the violence, the arrogance, and the stubbornness of war. It's fitting that the boar is a symbol of her father, as she exemplifies pigheadedness in her refusal to back down from most situations — especially fights. It's in her nature, her very blood, to find a fight in everything, to take every challenge personally. She doesn't always go out of her way to pick them, but she doesn't take insult lightly. You mess with her, you mess with her fist; you mess with her dad, you mess with her fist.
She starts out as your archetypal bully character: the first thing you see her do in the books is try to give Percy a swirlie while her gang of cronies eggs her on and laughs. She finds out very quickly that messing with Percy around water is a terrible idea, but, like all good bullies who get a taste of their own medicine, she vows a not-so-literally death upon Percy Jackson. This sparks a rivalry she doesn't let go for a long time, because it's always so easy to goad Percy into fighting back, which is exactly what she wants. She always wants a fight. The demigod brand of ADHD aside, she can't still too long without going a little stir crazy.
She's a naturally born warrior and it shows. It helps being the daughter of the war god, and she takes her role as the eldest Ares child and cabin leader very seriously. She can always been seen commanding the first line of campers during battle. If there's one thing she isn't afraid of, it's war. She is war. War is what keeps her alive, gets her blood pumping, and she stands strong in the face of possible, if not certain, death. She would rather die a hero fighting than run away a coward. Her courage in battle is even rewarded by her father, bestowing upon her the Blessing of Ares after she slays the Lydian Drakon. Ares later calls it the finest Drakon slaying he's ever seen.
However, her relationship her father is complicated. As gods tend to be uninvolved in their children's lives, it's hard to say how much of a relationship they actually have. She clearly respects him, fights in his name, silently swears vengeance on Percy who disgraced her his name by defeating him in battle — but with that respect comes a terrible sense of inadequacy and the need to prove herself. Ares isn't only the god of war, but the god of masculinity as well, and every day is a battle for her father's respect, his acknowledgement, his blessing. Her one true fear is disappointing her father, of not being a worthy enough daughter in his eyes. She uses her quest for the Golden Fleece as an opportunity to impress him, but even then he isn't truly impressed until she faces the Drakon headfirst with only her spear.
Everything she does is to be more like her father, and, just like her father, she forms a strong relationship with an Aphrodite camper named Silena. Clarisse is only ever mentioned to have a few friends, and most of them are probably her siblings, but none of them are ever important until Silena. The relationships Clarisse forges in the last few books are crucial to her character, emphasizing that even in times of war there is still compassion and love.
Despite her abrasiveness and general dislike of most of her fellow campers, Clarisse does care about people. She cares about her siblings when they get injured — according to Percy, it's the one thing that will always sober her out of her rage. She cares about Chris — loves Chris, even — enough to spend an entire book and a half caring for him, worrying over him, trying to nurse him back to health after she found him in the Labyrinth, his mind overcome with madness. She cares about Silena, her best friend, comforts her in her time of need after Beckendorf's death, and refuses to see her as anything but a hero in the event of her own death. Eventually, she even sort of makes up with Percy (especially after he helps her retrieve her father's stolen war chariot from her immortal brothers who'd been trying to make her look bad), and regardless of their bickering, she still considers him a friend and a worthy ally.
She would never admit to any of this, though. Feelings are not Clarisse's strong suit, and neither is friendliness. She's naturally defensive and stubborn, and only around select people does she let down her hair, so to speak. Even then she has a hard time admitting to anything, be it her failures or her feelings. The things she hates more than anything are being made a fool of and being wrong. She doesn't admit her mistakes easily and apologies are hard to come by around her. Gratitude is even harder to come by, though she does actually thank Percy for helping her out with her brothers. Unfortunately, her stubbornness and outright refusal to fight a war unless she got proper recognition of what rightfully belonged to her caused her to pay the ultimate sacrifice, Silena's death. She never admits she was wrong, but she honors her friend in battle, at least attempts to make up for it.
What Clarisse may not say out loud she makes up for in her actions, even in the subtlest of ways. She's less hostile to Percy, their rivalry turned somewhat friendly; she opens up around Chris, though he's probably the only one who can truly make her laugh goodnaturedly as opposed to mockingly. She's still just as violent and rude as when she started, belching and cursing and generally disrespecting any sort of manners, but she has a heart. She has feelings she's too afraid to show because she has to live up to her dad's image. She may be brave when it comes to battle, but she still has a long way to go before she can truly face herself.
- ★ COURT ALLIANCE:
Clarisse will be aligning with the Seelie court. She may roll her eyes at the way they uphold honor and chivalry, but she herself is a hero. She might be violent and rude, but she is courageous and loyal and would never turn her back on a friend, would never let a debt go unpaid. She may fight for the sake of a fight, but when it really matters you know you can always count on her to defend what she thinks is right and not back down from that cause.
- ★ ABILITIES:
—Annabeth, The Lightning Thief
☐ DEMIGOD HARDWIRING: Like all demigods, Clarisse is equipped with the innate ability to fight, possessing heightened senses and reflexes that will help keep her alive in battle. To most people, it would make her seem restless and unable to focus, but it is simply her natural instinct to want to get out there and kick some ass, go on quests, be a hero. Especially as a child of Ares, the battle instinct is strong. Her hardwiring also comes with a less convenient side-effect, which presents itself as dyslexia. The manufacturer default is Ancient Greek, so English often ends up scrambled.
☑ BATTLE SKILLS: As a daughter of Ares, Clarisse is borne with enhanced battle skills, strength, and reflexes, on top of the skills she already possesses as a demigod. She is one of the most skilled warriors at Camp Half-Blood, especially excelling in hand-to-hand combat and wrestling. She singlehandedly slayed a Lydian Drakon without armor or a shield and has brought her team to victory in Capture the Flag multiple times under her leadership. And far as she's concerned, any information that doesn't help you fight is useless information.
☑ MASTERY OF WEAPONS: Another ability granted to children of Ares, Clarisse has expert knowledge of all weapons and how to use them. In a fight with the Apollo cabin, an Ares camper called down a curse to turn the Apollo arrows to rubber, so she may even posses limited magical control over certain weapons.
☑ NECROMANCY: The ability to summon the defeated soldiers of any battle from history and use them to aid her on quests or in battle.

The last thing Clarisse remembers is slaying the drakon, holding Silena and watching her die. It was her fault. She let her best friend die over a stupid fight with the Apollo cabin. But if they hadn't stolen what was rightfully property of Ares, none of this would've happened. Selina wouldn't be dead and she... wouldn't feel so guilty.
But, really, she's angry. Some people say she's always angry, and they're probably right. That's just how it is for children of Ares. Honestly, the Hulk was probably a child of Ares... well, if he actually existed. Whatever. She's mad and she's alone and she's stuck in what looks like some kind of underground ruins. It's giving her Labyrinth vibes and she doesn't like it. At all. After her recon mission into the Labyrinth a few years ago, she swore never again. But here she is and she has no idea how she got here and the only thing she has to mask her apprehension and fear is anger. It's a coping mechanism as much as it is a legitimate reaction.
At least she still has her weapons, thank the gods. She'd found her sword and shield stuck in some of the shrubbery around her, like they'd fallen from the sky or something. She doesn't question it. She doesn't care so much how she got here but how she's going to get out. Life as a demigod has taught her that regardless of how innocent or normal something seems, it'll probably try to kill you eventually. Her fight or flight instinct is kicking in pretty hard right about now: fight, then flight. She's never been one to run from a fight if she can win. Even if she can't, she'd rather die trying.
She shivers involuntarily, a chill running down her spine. That's right, she'd been fighting a Hyperborean giant and got a whole block full of ice to the face. She just hopes, wherever they are, her cabinmates are pulling their own without her. She can't bear to lose anymore friends. And, as much as she hates to even think it, she hopes Percy kicks Kronos' ass, even if it means he'll get all the glory. He always does, somehow.
She can dwell on Percy's victories later, though. Right now, she needs to figure out how she's going to get out of these stupid ruins. She hadn't really been paying attention to the fairies, but maybe the very convenient locket they gave her will help. From what she gathered, it can apparently show her people and make phone calls. She doesn't trust it at all, but what other choice does she have? If she uses it and monsters show up, she isn't entirely defenseless, and she's still running on adrenaline from slaying the drakon. She can do this. What does she really have to lose?
"Show me," she commands it, but then hesitates on the name. It seems unlikely that he would be here, but she doesn't really have any other options, and he is kind of useful for getting people out of bad situations (even if half the time he caused those bad situations). She grumbles and then, finally, speaks his name: "Percy Jackson."
